Mariano’s in Bronzeville

Along with for profit partners, CNI spearheaded a development to build a 74,000 square foot Mariano’s grocery along historic Martin Luther King Boulevard in the Bronzeville neighborhood. This $26 million project spurred additional development, created nearly 400 permanent jobs, and continues to provide local residents with access to fresh, healthy foods.

Located at 39th Street and Martin Luther King Drive, the Mariano’s site was formerly part of the Chicago Housing Authority’s Ida B. Wells Homes. This development is part of CHA’s Plan For Transformation to transform blighted neighborhoods into vibrant residential, retail and commercial communities. The store was designed by Johnson and Lee Architects and incorporates historical photos of Bronzeville and its residents.
